In 2018 I had the chance to redesign Soundberg Festival, a boutique festival in, on, and around the most renown sight in Graz, the Schlossberg. The Uhrturm on top of the Schlossberg has become an icon for Graz far beyond the city's borders. We had to deconstruct it though, to show that the actual spectacle comes from underneath it. Thus the logo shows the famous landmark in the process of bursting and giving way to the sound and light that comes from within. With it's many caves, dungeons and underground floors, the Schlossberg adds flavour and atmosphere to this event like no other location could. That's also the reason why it was the biggest influence on the design we created. The typelogo winks at this massive rock formation with it's cuts and edges.
While the location of the festival is somewhat of an institution in Graz, the festival itself was supposed to be anything but that. The goal was to question said institutions, to reflect on what is "supposed to be" and to dare to change what is already there. We developed a messaging and design that does exactly that: Changing what is "ought to be" by striking through and replacing it. Soundberg is allowed to be unfinished, open-minded and beyond categories.
